Responsibilities Plan, organize, and coordinate all Intervention services for at risk students. Eligibility Criteria for Intervention Programs • California Standards Test (CST) scores are below 350 (Basic, Below Basic, Far Below Basic • Ds or Fs in progress reports: English, Math, ESL, etc • English Learners not making adequate progress in ESL • Students with Disabilities expected to meet grade-level standards as determined by their IEP and are not making adequate progress Student applications will be distributed by homeroom and by U.S. mail. Students identified forservices are required to have their parents sign the forms whether or not their child participates in the program. Mail to Nimitz Middle School or fax to 323) 773-5201 PROGRAMS OFFERED AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES Students with ELD levels: 1, 2, 3, 4, or P are eligible to participate in the English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP). Curriculum used is the Voyager Passport Curricula. Focus is on target word study, fluency and comprehension and vocabulary. Supplemental materials include Write Time for Kids and Weaver Instructional Program computer based reading program. Mathematics program will be Prentice Hall Math Intervention Kit, Action Learning Intervention Program: Learning Tree or Compass Learning are funded for English Learners under Title III (federal funding) and ELAP (state funding). Title III: Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement Act under “No Child Left Behind” legislation addresses the needs of English Learners in all content areas. Time: 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Days: Monday, Wednesday or Thursday (2 days per week) Hours: 30 Subject: ESL and Mathematics for English Learners Track Dates : ELAP B1 Track July 24-Aug. 24. 2006 and Nov. 6-Dec. 6, 2006 ELAP C1 Track July 24-Oct. 2, 2006 ELAP A1 Track Oct. 9-Dec 13. 2006 ELAP B2 Track Jan. 22-Feb. 28, 2007 and May 7-June 15, 2007 ELAP C2 Track Jan. 22 - April 18, 2007 ELAP A2 Track April 9-June 17, 2007 SATURDAY SCHOOL Saturday School consists of three programs: • Required Learning Academy for Gr. 6 students is required for students who are not proficient on the California Standards Test (CST) • Extended Learning Academy is for all at-risk students at secondary year round schools • English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP) – English Learners Four Saturday Sessions are scheduled for the 2006-07 School Year. Classes are normed at 25:1. The curricula are English Language Arts and Mathematics from Action Learning Systems-Intervention Programs. A coach is provided to support the instructional program. English Language Arts Program is based on reciprocal teaching. The Mathematics Program encourages student participation through use of targeted learning strategies, classroom manipultives, and interactive practice. Results of pre- and post test results are available through the Intervention Office. ESL students use curriculum designed by LAUSD for ESL 1A/1B and 2A/2B. Time: 8:00 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. Day: 8 Saturdays Subject: English and Mathematics Session Dates: RLA / ELA Session 1 July 8-August 26, 2006 RLA / ELA Session 2 September 23-November 18, 2006 RLA / ELA Session 3 January 6-March 10, 2007 RLA / ELA Session 4 March 17-May 12, 2007 INTERSESSION Students will be able to take one course per intersession. The classes are 33:1. The English Language Arts Program is designed by Voyager Expanded Learning - Timewarp. This program focuses on developing fluency, reading, reading comprehension and writing through the study of various countries and cultures: Greece (ESL), Africa (Gr. 6), China (Gr. 6/7), Latin America (Gr. 7/8) and Native America (Gr. 8) Math Curriculum uses Princeton Review Gr. 6-red and Gr. 7-blue. Focus is on grade level standards for mathematics. Homeroom.com is a valuable teacher resource for developing assessments and practice sheets and links to other math resources. Trained teachers can use homeroom.com throughout the school year. Pre- and post test results are available. Time: 9:20 a.m. – 3:13 p.m. Days: Monday – Friday (16 days) Hours: 80 Subject: English and Mathematics Emergency Education Immigration Program (EIEP) The Emergency Immigrant Education Program (EIEP) provides supplemental educational services for students who: • are currently enrolled in Kindergarten through grade 12 • were born outside the United States and its territories • have attended school in the United States for less than three full academic years This service will be offered to eligible students during intersession This program has a class size of 25 students. The curriculum has been designed by the LAUSD EIEP Office. Dates: January 16-February 6, 2007 Time: 7:30-11:50 a.m. Extended School Year (ESY) Each special education day class (SDC) student is eligible for one ESY per year. Intervention Office works with the Special Education Support Unit to set up transportation for eligible students. Student program is based on the IEP. Service will be provided through the Intersession Program. CELEBRATION OF OUR SUCCESS Celebrate Our Success At the end of each afterschool and Saturday School Session, students celebrate their successes with a pizza party, participate in raffles and receive certificates for attendance. The joint effort of the school community: students, teachers and school staff, parents, and businesses is necessary to encourage students to stay in school and work hard for academic success. Donations will be used to purchase incentives: school supplies, stickers, etc, to encourage at risk students to stay in school and participate in these intervention programs. Washington Mutual-WaMoola for Schools. When you use your Washington Mutual Visa or Debit Card, Washington Mutual will make a donation to Nimitz. Schoolpop Shop and Earn Program: Schoolpop.com.
